Transforming Waste Into Warmth

Sustainability Doesn’t Stop at Solar Panels

At Transform Solar, we promote sustainability — clean energy and smarter use of resources. However, sustainability isn’t just about what powers our homes. It’s also about how we show up for our communities.

That’s why we want to spotlight an incredible local initiative called Bags to Bedrolls, led by the SunRaising Foundation. It’s one of those ideas that makes you stop and say, why aren’t we all doing this already? The program takes something most of us barely think about, single-use plastic bags, and turns them into durable, handmade bedrolls for people experiencing homelessness right here in the Tampa Bay area.

Turning Plastic Waste Into Something Useful

The process is simple but powerful. Donated plastic bags are cleaned, cut into strips, and turned into “plarn” (plastic yarn). Volunteers then crochet that plarn into thick, weather-resistant bedrolls that provide insulation, padding, and a bit of comfort for people sleeping outside.

It takes roughly 700 plastic bags to make just one bedroll, which really puts into perspective how much waste we generate, and how much good can come from rethinking it.

A Growing Crisis We Can’t Ignore

The need for programs like this is real and growing. According to the Florida Coalition to End Homelessness, more than 30,000 people in Florida experience homelessness on any given night, with many living unsheltered — in cars, parks, or other places not meant for habitation. Rising housing costs, limited affordable housing, and stagnant wages have pushed more individuals and families into impossible situations.

Nationwide, the latest U.S. Point-in-Time homelessness count recorded 771,480 people without stable housing, the highest total in years. These figures remind us that homelessness isn’t an abstract statistic, it’s a lived reality for thousands of people in our state and beyond.

Local Hands, Real Impact

What makes Bags to Bedrolls especially meaningful is the way it brings people together. Seniors, volunteers, and community partners work side by side, turning discarded materials into something useful and dignified.

The finished bedrolls are distributed through Feeding Tampa Bay’s Trinity Cafe program, reaching people across Hillsborough, Pinellas, and Pasco counties — often those living completely unsheltered.

Why This Matters to Transform Solar

At Transform Solar, our work is about long-term thinking: investing in solutions that reduce waste, strengthen communities, and create a more resilient future. Solar energy helps homeowners and businesses gain energy independence and lower their environmental footprint, but true sustainability goes beyond technology.

Programs like Bags to Bedrolls reflect the same values we believe in: thoughtful resource use, local action, and care for the people who live here.

How You Can Be Part of the Solution

If you’re looking for ways to get involved, a great place to start is by donating your plastic grocery bags at any of the Bags to Bedrolls drop-off locations throughout the Tampa Bay area. What might seem like a small, everyday item can be transformed into something meaningful — providing insulation, comfort, and dignity to someone sleeping outdoors.

You can also make a difference by volunteering your time, whether that means helping prepare materials or working alongside others to create the bedrolls themselves. The Bags to Bedrolls fund helps purchase weaving materials for volunteers, including looms and scissors, and your contribution can also help secure additional storage space for donations. Even simply sharing programs like this with friends, family, or coworkers helps raise awareness and grow the impact. Small actions, when multiplied across a community, truly add up.

Building a More Sustainable Future Together

At the end of the day, sustainability isn’t just about cleaner power. It’s about building communities where fewer things are wasted — including people. That’s a future worth working toward!
